So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole, A Review

3.5 / 5 stars

So Let Them Burn is a Jamaican inspired sapphic fantasy featuring dragons and siblings.

Overall I enjoyed reading this book and I would consider this a solid debut novel.

I’ll start with what I enjoyed.

The sisterly bond was amazing. Elara and Faron’s care for each other was deeply prominent throughout the entire book and their dynamic felt like genuine sibling banter. I appreciate Cole’s development of Elara and Signey’s relationship. Their developing emotions felt natural and actually helped move the story forwards.

However, I felt a little lost while I was reading the book. I didn’t have a clear sense of how the time moved or where the characters were at any point of time. It was hard for me to picture because everything always felt a little vague and foggy. The pacing was a little off for me. Sometimes the story surged forwards and then sometimes it would slow to the point of boredom.

In essence, the high points were extremely high but the low points were also very low.

The story itself wasn’t all that bad and I was very entertained while reading it. I would say this book is worth a chance especially if you enjoy dragons and sweet sibling relationships.

Diamond Out!
