Webtoon Recommendation #2: Skool of Street

Sport, Ongoing, ~20 episodes out, Long episodes, Updates Monday

I just started this webtoon this week but I’m already so hooked! Usually I’m a sucker for romance webtoons, but the interactions between each new character entertains me a lot more than some half-hearted pushed romance. This webtoon is truly a breath of fresh air from the lovey-dovey, must-find-a-partner tendencies of society.

Now, don’t be put off by the genre! Yes, this whole webtoon revolves around a sport, but that sport is dance, one of the most artistic exercises there is; and, while there is tension and pressure in the story built around dance, it is all for the sake of developing the characters (or, I guess, only the main character for now) rather than blatantly creating a sports comic with no tangible, comprehensible story at all. Seeing improvement in the character’s dance, while faithful to the genre of the Webtoon, is representative of each character’s growth, which I find interesting and unique.

Webtoon Synopsis: DJ, drop the beat! When 18-year-old K-pop stan Suhyeon gets his heart broken, he turns to his actual true love, girl group sensation MainTainA–especially his bias, the group’s main dancer, Hailey. Leaving his bittersweet first relationship behind to transfer to Seoul, Suhyeon finds not only a spitting image of his bias in the school dance club member Hye-eun, who is supposedly Hailey’s younger sister, but also a new love in the most unexpected of places: the art of street dance! While helping Hye-eun overcome her stage fright, Suhyeon finds there may be more to life than love!

Comments

Art: The artist conveys the fluidity (or, juxtaposingly, the rigidity) of dance well by utilizing very dynamic poses! And they don’t mess up proportions whatsoever! The “goofy” panels are also well done in that they made me laugh. Everything is just very well done and visually appealing so there isn’t much to say.

These are some panels I really liked/thought were funny!

Characters: I love how distinct each character is! Sometimes webtoons will have a couple of characters with same face syndrome or just too many characters to remember, but this webtoon only focuses on a couple of characters with very distinct appearances and personalities- perfect for casual enjoyers like me! One note I have is that I feel like one of the characters, Suhyeon, has been reduced to a one-dimensional personality after the first couple episodes, since the other characters introduce more to the story. Nevertheless, he is still entertaining.

Story: The pacing is great. What more can I say? So far, nothing seems too dragged out or rushed. Again, there’s not a lot of romance at the time I’m writing this, but I have heard there will be in the future. At least it’ll be reasonable, because the characters had time to develop together instead of being mashed into the author’s OTP.

Go read it!!!

Peace and love,
